Activist Moved to Hospital Amid Deteriorating Health
On the afternoon of July 18, 2026, the Delhi Police shifted climate activist and education reformer Sonam Wangchuk from his hunger strike site at Jantar Mantar to Safdarjung Hospital in New Delhi. The action, described by police as a move for "essential medical care," occurred on the 21st day of Wangchuk's indefinite hunger strike, which commenced on June 28, 2026.
Deteriorating Vitals and Court Compliance
The police action follows recent directives from the Delhi High Court ordering daily clinical monitoring of Wangchuk's health. The court previously stressed that the "life of every citizen is precious" and directed that medical intervention be provided if his vitals reached a critical stage.
According to medical teams, Wangchuk has suffered severe muscle loss and weight reduction over his 20 days of fasting, leading to heightened concerns of vital organ damage. Upon arrival at Safdarjung Hospital, medical authorities described him as weak but stable under observation.
Family and Supporters Raise Objections
Following his removal, Wangchuk’s wife, Gitanjali J. Angmo, strongly questioned the forced hospitalization. She stated that the court's order did not mandate the police to forcefully remove him or administer medical treatment against his will, demanding that no medical interventions be conducted without the express consent of his family and the independent medical professionals who have monitored him.
Organizers and supporters expressed outrage at the police intervention, labeling it an attempt to dismantle the peaceful protest under the guise of medical welfare.
