Widespread Police Detentions Across Central Delhi
Following the dispersal of the "Sansad Chalo" march on July 20, 2026, Delhi Police executed widespread preventive detentions, whisking away over 220 student protesters and activists in police buses from the vicinity of Patel Chowk and Windsor Place.
Detainees were transported to multiple police stations, primarily Mandir Marg, Tilak Marg, Parliament Street, and distant facilities in Bawana.
Legal Support Interventions
Within hours of the detentions, the CJP Legal Rights Cell, backed by volunteer advocates from the Supreme Court Bar Association, mobilized legal teams outside Mandir Marg and Tilak Marg stations.
- Legal Representation: Lawyers demanded access to detainees, citing constitutional protections under Article 22.
- Condition of Detainees: Lawyers reported that while several students had minor bruises from the lathi-charge, police officials maintained basic administrative decorum.
- Ration & Water: CJP Kolkata and Delhi volunteer networks supplied food packets and drinking water to detained students waiting inside station premises.
Unconditional Release Late Monday Night
Following intense legal pressure and continuous peaceful gatherings outside the police stations by fellow students, Delhi Police began releasing detainees in batches starting at 9:00 PM. By midnight on July 20, all detained students were released without formal arrest warrants, returning safely to the Jantar Mantar camp site.
