Multi-State Quash Applications Listed Together
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta has placed Article 142 applications before the CJI Surya Kant bench seeking quashing of protest-linked FIRs. After Delhi Police, identical pleas cover Bihar, Assam, Maharashtra and West Bengal. The batch is listed for 2:00 PM on 1 September 2026.
Delhi Police Position
- Seeks closure of 13 FIRs from the 20–25 July CJP / NEET protest window.
- Cites the 25 July central decision as the basis for not pursuing those cases.
- Simultaneously asks leave to register a fresh, limited FIR against 2,873 persons it lists as having criminal antecedents, confined to alleged bodily harm or property damage at the site.
CJP Response on Record
Saurav Das called the Delhi filing a “positive development” and said high-level talks continue on remaining FIRs and compensation. He, Prashant Bhushan and other CJP members said they would be present in court.

Sept 5 March Not Withdrawn
On 31 August the same bench refused a retired Delhi Police officer’s plea to restrain the India Gate to Delhi Police HQ march. CJI Surya Kant termed it a law-and-order and policy matter and said there were no compelling circumstances for a judicial stay. CJP still lists three unmet July 25 items: compensation for families of deceased NEET candidates, withdrawal of remaining FIRs without future targeting, and accountability for alleged RAF / Delhi Police excesses.
What the Hearing Will Decide
- Whether Article 142 can close the listed protest FIRs across five jurisdictions in one order.
- Whether a separate FIR against the 2,873-name list is permitted.
- Whether any order is treated by CJP as fulfilment of the July 25 package or only a partial step.
